A sept ans quand la guerre éclate\, sa famille est évacuée dans un village reculé où Dang Thai Son joue sur des pianos délabrés sauvés de l’école de sa mère à Hanoï. Ses cours ont lieu dans des abris antiaériens sous une pluie de bombes. Un an après la fin de la guerre\, il fait la rencontre du pianiste russe Isaac Katz qui vient donner des master classes à Hanoï. En 1977\, il entre au Conservatoire de Moscou où il étudie avec Vladimir Natanson et Dmitri Bashkirov. En 1980\, il participe au concours Chopin de Varsovie où il remporte non seulement la victoire\, mais également tous les prix spéciaux. C’est alors le début d’une carrière internationale. \nDepuis\, il s’est produit avec pratiquement tous les grands orchestres d’Europe et aux côtés de Yo-Yo Ma\, Mstislav Rostropovich\, Pinchas Zukerman et d’autres musiciens de légende. Il donne des récitals dans les plus grandes salles de concert et consacre une grande partie de son temps à l’enseignement\, au conservatoire Oberlin de Montréal. En près d’un siècle d’existence du Concours Chopin\, il est le seul lauréat à avoir guidé un disciple (Bruce Liu\, le dernier 1er Prix en 2021) vers la victoire. A deux ans\, elle émigre au Japon et cinq ans plus tard\, elle s’établit au Canada. A Montréal\, elle s’enrichit de l’enseignement du pianiste Dang Thaï Son\, Premier Prix du Concours Chopin en 1980. \nEnfant prodige\, elle se met au piano à l’âge de quatre ans et un an plus tard\, elle participe à son premier Concours. S’ensuivent de nombreuses récompenses : les Premiers Prix du Kobe Art Center Piano Competition (Japon)\, du Concours de Hangzhou (Chine)\, de la 18e « Ettlingen International Piano Competition » (Allemagne)\, du Concours Chopin de Hartford et de celui de Philadelphie (USA)… En 2023\, elle remporte le Concours Thomas & Evon Cooper pour jeunes solistes (aux Etats-Unis)\, puis le Deuxième Prix de la première édition du Concours International Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli de Brescia\, en Italie\, avec plusieurs Prix spéciaux\, dont le Prix du Public. \nSophia Liu se produit depuis sur de prestigieuses scènes d’Amérique du Nord et du Sud\, d’Asie et d’Europe (Opéra de Hanoï\, Taipei National Concert Hall)\, en récital ou avec orchestre (Bazzini Consort Orchestra à Brescia\, Orchestre Symphonique de l’Isle à Montréal\, Tolima Music Festival Orchestra\, etc.). Il fait son éducation musicale à Cracovie\, puis au Conservatoire Supérieure de Bydgoszcz. Il se perfectionne ensuite à la Yale School of Music sous la direction de Boris Berman. \nLauréat de nombreux concours\, il remporte en 2014 le Premier Prix du Concours Arthur Rubinstein in memoriam de Bydgoszcz. En 2015\, il est le seul pianiste polonais admis à la finale du prestigieux Concours Chopin de Varsovie où il se voit décerner plusieurs prix spéciaux. Le pianiste Krystian Zimerman s’enthousiasme et lui attribue une bourse de soutien. En mai 2017\, c’est la consécration avec un Premier Grand Prix du Concours Artur Rubinstein de Tel Aviv ainsi que cinq prix spéciaux\, dont celui de la meilleure interprétation de Chopin.
